January 16th-20th

Hello everyone,

I hope that you all had a wonderful week and and enjoyed the extra day with each other this weekend despite the rain and the fog.

Looking forward to this week's forecast I think we are safe from any ice or snow days.

This past week we focused on compound words in spelling and will be having our spelling test on Tuesday instead of Monday.

In math, we compared and contrasted various two-dimensional shapes, looking at the size of angles, number of vertices, sides and sets of parallel lines.  We also began our study of three-dimensional shapes.

With Ms. Powell we worked on figuring out how long we had been in school.

In health, we are continuing to focus on where various foods come from and how that impacts the environment.

In social studies, we reviewed our timeline into the past and analyzed maps and images of 19th century communities in Canada.  We have also started to research various First Nations communities.

In art and language we completed our "Thankfulness" cards and reflected on the choices made when developing the cover art work.  We also began to rehearse our readers' theatre plays and plan our advertising posters to recruit an audience.

We also had our second visit to the Innovation Studio to work on building the EV3, J-Bot computers.  We have a week long break before we will be back in to attempt some programming with them.

We are hoping to finish "The BFG" this week.  We only have four chapters to go!  We will then be watching the movie(s) to compare and contrast the various versions of the story.

Have a great week!

We're Back!

Hello everyone,

I hope that you all had an amazing time over the break and that you had the chance to spend it with family, friends, and loved ones.  I enjoyed hearing all the students talk about what they were thankful for over the break.  They had wonderful stories to share.

I hope some of you have had the chance to see the preview of their thank you cards, on Seesaw, that will be coming home this week.  The writing is all their's.  The cover art work is a mosaic based on their understanding of warm and cool colours.

Other items we have been working on this week are health and the study of where our food comes from.  If you have the opportunity in the next few weeks you may want to involve your child in looking at the food labels when you are shopping to learn and think about where their food comes from.

In math we have been continuing to work with 2 dimensional shapes, focusing on angles.  Next week we will begin linking them to 3 dimensional shapes through the use of nets. We also worked on one of the Mashup Math challenges, continuing growing and repeating patterns.

We had a free building Lego challenge on Tuesday, with the buses cancelled.  Thursday we started working with Mr. Julian in the Innovation Studio to build and program various robots.

Spelling is also back.  We have our first spelling test of the new year tomorrow.

Have a great week!
Ms. Sparling
